EY publishes its French Venture Capital Barometer for 2020. France #1 in the EU
EY has published the results of the new annual French Venture Capital Barometer. This report lists the equity financing transactions of French Tech companies, from January 1 to December 31, 2020 and published before January 8, 2021.
In 2020, French innovative businesses carried out 620 fundraising operations, worth €5.4 billion, with a 7% increase in nominal terms, despite a real 16% fall.
Among the top five performing businesses in 2020 was Voodoo (with an estimated €400 million raised, with the amount not confirmed by the company), Mirakl (€256 million), Ynsect (€190 million), Ecovadis (€182 million), and Contentsquare (€173 million).
As for the “Life Sciences” industry, it is growing at a rate of 5% like the rest of the French Tech sector (€851 million, compared with €811 million in 2019), while FinTech has shown significant growth, with an increase of 57% (€622 million, compared with €397 million in 2019).
Driven by favorable conditions over the last few years, #FrenchTech should continue to see the Growth Equity segment grow, with fundraising in excess of €100 million. Between 2018 and 2020, these amounts grew by a multiple of four in nominal terms.
On the European level, France has gained the first position and became the leader followed by Germany. In the United Kingdom, investments are increasing in real and nominal terms, with €12.71 billion raised (+11% compared with 2019) and 1,136 transactions (+12%). Germany, however, has seen a decrease in real and nominal terms, with €5.24 billion raised (-14%) and 372 operations (-28%).
