Forty-two French establishments in the 2023 World University Rankings

Forty-two French establishments appear in the 2023 rankings of the best universities in the world, according to the 19th edition of The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, published on October 12, 2022. This is three places better than in the 2022 edition.

1,799 universities in 104 countries and regions, versus 1,662 in 2022

The Times Higher Education worked with a record 1,799 universities in 104 countries and regions this year. Teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook were the five broad categories that were scrutinized.

Paris Sciences et Lettres top French university since 2018

Ranked in the Top 50 of The Times Higher Education rankings since 2018, the University of Paris Sciences et Lettres retains its rank as the leading French university, achieving 14th place in Europe and 47th place in the world. The progression of 24 places of the Université Paris-Saclay (93rd), alongside Sorbonne University (90th) and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris (95th), means that France has one more establishment than the previous year among the top 100 universities in the rankings.

France in eighth position in the world within the Top 100

Based on this Top 100, France is in eighth position in the world (up one place) after the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Australia, the Netherlands and Hong Kong.

Scientific and educational influence of France internationally

According to the French Ministry for Higher Education and Research, these results are due to the French government’s investment policy in research and training. These include the various national investment programs and France 2030 (IdEx, I-Site, Excellence, etc.). Sixteen of the 17 establishments with an excellence initiative are present in the rankings, including eight in the Top 500.

This funding has contributed to the structural transformation of institutions, to the enrichment of their training offer and to the definition of their scientific signature.
